EPFL Achieves Record Efficiency for Single-Junction Microcrystalline Thin Film Silicon Solar Cells

EPFL’s Institute of Microengineering has reached a remarkable 10.7% efficiency single-junction microcrystalline silicon solar cell, clearly surpassing the previous world record of 10.1% held by the Japanese company Kaneka Corporation since 1998. Such significant efficiency, independently certified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE CalLab PV Cells), was achieved in addition with less than 2 micrometers of photovoltaic active material.

RNA-Carrying Nanoliposomes Effectively Target Ovarian Cancer Cells

By loading fragile RNA into silicon nanoparticles, researchers from The Methodist Hospital and two other institutions found a new drug delivery system can reduce the size of ovarian tumors by as much as 83 percent -- and stop tumor growth in chemotherapy-resistant ovarian cancer tissue.

Bruker Launches Ultra-Sensitive Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer for Nanoanalysis

At the European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry 2013 (EWCPS), Bruker launches the aurora Elite, a new ultra-sensitive Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Complementing the now updated workhorse aurora M90 ICP-MS for routine laboratory analysis, the new aurora Elite sets unprecedented and truly exceptional standards for sensitivity and matrix robustness, even exceeding the performance of expensive magnetic sector field ICP-MS systems in many aspects, and far exceeding the sensitivity of all other quadrupole ICP-MS systems on the market today.

Researchers Develop Self-Assembled Actin Filament System for 3D Microelectronic Structures

Miniaturization of electronic components is reaching a physical limit. While the solution of three dimensional assembly has the advantage of reducing bulk, the manufacture of electrical connections in these new products remains a technological challenge. Biologists and physicists from the CEA, CNRS, Université Joseph Fourier and Inra in Grenoble have developed a system of self-assembled connections using actin filaments for 3D microelectronic structures. Once the actin filaments become conductors, they join the various components of a system together. The results are published in the February 10, 2013 issue of Nature Materials

Researchers Film Complex Process of Protein Folding At Atomic Resolution

By combining low temperatures and NMR spectroscopy, the scientists visualized seven intermediate forms of the CylR2 protein while cooling it down from 25°C to -16°C. Their results show that the most instable intermediate form plays a key role in protein folding. The scientists' findings may contribute to a better understanding of how proteins adopt their structure and misfold during illness.

For innovative research on semiconductor devices, NJIT Professor Durgamadhab (Durga) Misra, the associate chair for graduate programs in the Newark College of Engineering (NCE) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive two Division Awards next May, the 2013 Electronic and Photonic Division Award and the 2013 Thomas D. Collinan Award from the Dielectric Science and Technology Division of the Electrochemical Society (ECS). Misra is an ECS Fellow.
