Micro Pyramids Capturing Living Cells

A field full of pyramids, but on a micro scale. Each of the pyramids hides a living cell. Thanks to 3D micro- and nano scale fabrication, promising new applications can be found. One of them is applying the micro pyramids for cell research: thanks to the open ‘walls’ of the pyramids, the cells interact. Scientists of the research institutes MESA+ and MIRA of the University of Twente in The Netherlands present this new technology and first applications in Small journal of the beginning of December.

Mentor Capital, Nanovega Ink LOI to Scale Up Nano-Scale Synthetic Antibodies Production

Mentor Capital, Inc. announced it has executed a Letter of Intent with Nanovega, Inc. for $6 million to fund the production scale up of its ultra-small synthetic antibodies. These nano-scale molecules are approximately one-tenth the size of most alternative cancer delivery bio-markers. The small size allows the nano-bodies to slip throughout solid tumors instead of piling up at the surface as is often currently encountered in cancer treatment.

Nanoscale Rainbows Show Promise for Better TV Displays and Solar Cells

New research at King's College London may lead to improved solar cells and LED-displays. Researchers from the Biophysics and Nanotechnology Group at King's, led by Professor Anatoly Zayats in the department of Physics have demonstrated in detail how to separate colours and create 'rainbows' using nanoscale structures on a metal surface. The research is published in Nature's Scientific Reports.

Researchers Produce Hydrogen from Water Using Light and Nanomaterials

In the first-ever experiment of its kind, researchers have demonstrated that clean energy hydrogen can be produced from water splitting by using very small metal particles that are exposed to sunlight. In the article, “Outstanding activity of sub-nm Au clusters for photocatalytic hydrogen production,” published in the journal Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, Alexander Orlov, PhD, an Assistant Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Stony Brook University, and his colleagues from Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory, found that the use of gold particles smaller than one nanometer resulted in greater hydrogen production than other co-catalysts tested.
