Researchers Explore Polymer Blend Molecular Structure Using Improved Chemical Microscopy

Using an enhanced form of "chemical microscopy" developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), researchers there have shown that they can peer into the structure of blended polymers, resolving details of the molecular arrangement at sub-micrometer levels.* The capability has important implications for the design of industrially important polymers like the polyethylene blends used to repair aging waterlines.

Electron Energy to Receive Fund for Nanocomposite Magnet Development Project

Electron Energy Corporation (EEC), one of the world’s leading producers of rare earth magnets and magnet systems, announced today that the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) will invest in its applied research project examining novel magnetic materials which reduce, eliminate or more efficiently utilize rare earth elements. EEC’s project will demonstrate an innovative, inexpensive processing route to produce next generation nanocomposite magnets in bulk form.

High-resolution real-time images show in mice how nerves may be damaged during the earliest stages of multiple sclerosis. The results suggest that the critical step happens when fibrinogen, a blood-clotting protein, leaks into the central nervous system and activates immune cells called microglia.

Enpirion Announces Key Milestone in Micro-Fabrication and Materials Technology

Enpirion, the leader of integrated power IC solutions, announced the successful commercialization of a new magnetic alloy, which enables the miniaturization of passive magnetic components and their assimilation with integrated circuits at wafer level. So-called wafer level magnetics (WLM) present a leap in traditional technology, which will take magnetic components from their 3-dimensional discrete shape to a planar 2-dimensional thin-film form that can be deposited with standard wafer processes on top of CMOS wafers.
