Researchers Track Nanoscale Structural Changes Degrading Battery Performance

Batteries do not age gracefully. The lithium ions that power portable electronics cause lingering structural damage with each cycle of charge and discharge, making devices from smartphones to tablets tick toward zero faster and faster over time. To stop or slow this steady degradation, scientists must track and tweak the imperfect chemistry of lithium-ion batteries with nanoscale precision.

ACS Member Stefan W. Hell Among Winners of Kavli Prize for Nanoscience

For his pioneering work in optics, Stefan W. Hell, an American Chemical Society (ACS) member for eight years, was named one of three winners of the Kavli Prize in Nanoscience. The prizes, which consist of a cash award of $1 million in each of three fields, were announced today by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
