Lab-on-a-Chip Device and Cell Phone Help Determine Concentration of HIV RNA Molecules

In developing nations, rural areas, and even one's own home, limited access to expensive equipment and trained medical professionals can impede the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Many qualitative tests that provide a simple "yes" or "no" answer (like an at-home pregnancy test) have been optimized for use in these resource-limited settings. But few quantitative tests—those able to measure the precise concentration of biomolecules, not just their presence or absence—can be done outside of a laboratory or clinical setting.

Researchers Discover How Bacteria Construct ‘Nanomachines’ Outside the Cell

Cambridge scientists have uncovered the mechanism by which bacteria build their surface propellers (flagella) – the long extensions that allow them to swim towards food and away from danger. The results, published this week in the journal Nature, demonstrate how the mechanism is powered by the subunits themselves as they link in a chain that is pulled to the flagellum tip.

Gold Nanoparticles Combined with siRNA Molecules Effective against Brain Cancer in Mice

Back in 2009 we cited promising work from Chad Mirkin (winner of the 2002 Foresight Institute Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology in the Experimental category) that covering 13-nanometer gold nanoparticles with siRNA molecules enable the usually unstable and fragile molecules to enter tumor cells in culture and silence the tumor cell gene against which the siRNA molecules were targeted.

Low-Cost Water Splitter Created Using Silicon Semiconductor Coated in Nickel Nanofilm

Stanford University scientists have created a silicon-based water splitter that is both low-cost and corrosion-free. The novel device – a silicon semiconductor coated in an ultrathin layer of nickel – could help pave the way for large-scale production of clean hydrogen fuel from sunlight, according to the scientists. Their results are published in the Nov. 15 issue of the journal Science.

Tiny Holograms Created Using Nanoantenna Metasurface

Researchers have created tiny holograms using a "metasurface" capable of the ultra-efficient control of light, representing a potential new technology for advanced sensors, high-resolution displays and information processing. The metasurface, thousands of V-shaped nanoantennas formed into an ultrathin gold foil, could make possible "planar photonics" devices and optical switches small enough to be integrated into computer chips for information processing, sensing and telecommunications, said Alexander Kildishev, associate research professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University.
