General Approach for Mixing Nanoparticles to Fabricate Multifunctional Materials

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have developed a general approach for combining different types of nanoparticles to produce large-scale composite materials. The technique, described in a paper published online by Nature Nanotechnology on October 20, 2013, opens many opportunities for mixing and matching particles with different magnetic, optical, or chemical properties to form new, multifunctional materials or materials with enhanced performance for a wide range of potential applications.

Thin Oxide Film with New Elemental Composition Developed for Driving Next-Generation Displays

Dr. Shinya Aikawa, a post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Kazuhito Tsukagoshi, Principal Investigator, and Dr. Toshihide Nabatame, General Manager, from the NIMS International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (WPI-MANA) developed a pixel switching semiconductor, which will be the key to driving next-generation displays, by using an oxide film with a new elemental composition.

Scientists Quantify Particle Fracture in Lithium Ion Batteries

Materials in lithium ion battery electrodes expand and contract during charge and discharge. These volume changes drive particle fracture, which shortens battery lifetime. A group of ETH and PSI scientists have quantified this effect for the first time using high-resolution 3D movies recorded using x-ray tomography at the Swiss Light Source.
