Sorting Cells Faster Using New Imaging Flow Cytometry Technique

A team of engineers led by computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego, has developed a new approach that marries computer vision and hardware optimization to sort cells up to 38 times faster than is currently possible. The approach could be used for clinical diagnostics, stem cell characterization and other applications.

Lux Research Predicts Supercapacitor Market to Reach $836 Million in 2018

The market for supercapacitors will more than double to $836 million in 2018, up from $466 million in 2013, according to Lux Research. An emerging energy storage solution that bridges the gap between conventional capacitors and rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors will grow based mainly on adoption in transportation applications like hybrid buses and micro-hybrids. Consumer electronics and wind turbines make up the other significant opportunities.

‘Waviness’ in Carbon Nanotube Forests Dramatically Reduces Their Stiffness

A new study has found that “waviness” in forests of vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes dramatically reduces their stiffness, answering a long-standing question surrounding the tiny structures. Instead of being a detriment, the waviness may make the nanotube arrays more compliant and therefore useful as thermal interface material for conducting heat away from future high-powered integrated circuits.

New Overhauser Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Enhanced NMR Tool to Study Membrane Protein Structure

Membrane proteins are responsible for transporting chemicals and messages between a cell and its environment. But determining their structure has proved challenging for scientists. A study by UC Santa Barbara's Han Research Group demonstrates a new tool to resolve the structure of membrane-embedded and membrane-associating proteins using the water dynamics gradient they found across and above the lipid bilayer as a unique ruler.
