High-performance thermoelectric materials that convert waste heat to electricity could one day be a source of more sustainable power. But they need to be a lot more efficient before they could be effective on a broad scale in places like power plants or military bases, researchers say.

Graphene Combined with Silver Nanowires to Form Thin, Transparent and Stretchable Electrode

A hybrid transparent and stretchable electrode could open the new way for flexible displays, solar cells, and even electronic devices fitted on a curvature substrate such as soft eye contact lenses, by the UNIST(Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) research team.

In its annual survey of semiconductor probe card suppliers for 2012, leading market research firm, VLSIresearch, ranked FormFactor as the top supplier of advanced semiconductor probe cards (memory and non-memory) following its merger last year with MicroProbe.

Researchers Construct Polymer Opals from Spherical Nanoparticles

Instead of through pigments, these ‘polymer opals’ get their colour from their internal structure alone, resulting in pure colour which does not run or fade. The materials could be used to replace the toxic dyes used in the textile industry, or as a security application, making banknotes harder to forge. Additionally, the thin, flexible material changes colour when force is exerted on it, which could have potential use in sensing applications by indicating the amount of strain placed on the material.

QuantumWise and DTU Collaborate to Model Electron-Phonon Coupling in Nanoelectronic Devices

The Danish company QuantumWise and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) will engage in a project that makes it possible to simulate large-scale nano-electronic devices, where electron-phonon coupling is taken into account. The result will be an extension of the capabilities of the software package Atomistix ToolKit (ATK).

Novel Material Utilizes Nanometer-Scale Structures to Make Paper Repellent to Liquids

Paper is known for its ability to absorb liquids, making it ideal for products such as paper towels. But by modifying the underlying network of cellulose fibers, etching off surface “fluff” and applying a thin chemical coating, researchers have created a new type of paper that repels a wide variety of liquids – including water and oil.

PeakForce QNM may help Address Growing Medical Concerns Around Nanotoxicology

Professor Dr M. N. V. Ravi Kumar and Dr Dimitrios Lamprou, of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, believe an advanced form of atomic force microscopy, known as PeakForce QNM, could boost developments in the field of nanomedicines, the encapsulation of potent drugs in tiny particles measuring billionths of a meter in diameter. They described how this detailed imaging approach may also help scientists address growing concerns in the medical world around "nanotoxicology", the build-up of microscopic particles in people's tissues.

Mentor Graphics Corp. today announced significant achievements in its continued collaboration with TSMC on 20nm physical verification kit optimizations. This joint effort has reduced Calibre® nmDRC™ 20nm signoff runtimes by at least a factor of 3X and memory requirements by 60% compared to initial design kits released last year.
