QMF and SPTS Achieve Epitaxial Growth of 3C SiC Films on 300mm Silicon Wafers

The Queensland Micro and Nanotechnology Facility (QMF) of Griffith University and industry partner SPTS Technologies, a supplier of advanced wafer processing solutions for the global semiconductor industry and related markets, have announced epitaxial growth of 3C silicon carbide (SiC) films on 300mm silicon wafers.

Mentor Graphics Corp. today announced significant achievements in its continued collaboration with TSMC on 20nm physical verification kit optimizations. This joint effort has reduced Calibre® nmDRC™ 20nm signoff runtimes by at least a factor of 3X and memory requirements by 60% compared to initial design kits released last year.

Spherical Nanoparticles Form Netlike Structures When Encountered by Cancerous Tumors

Scientists at the University of California, San Diego, have designed tiny spherical particles to float easily through the bloodstream after injection, then assemble into a durable scaffold within diseased tissue. An enzyme produced by a specific type of tumor can trigger the transformation of the spheres into netlike structures that accumulate at the site of a cancer, the team reports in the journal Advanced Materials this week.

One example are Prince Rupert's Drops, or Dutch tears: you can hit their thick end with a hammer without breaking them while a slight pressure applied to their thin end is enough to shatter the entire tear.

Study Evaluates Impact of Nanotechnology Innovation for Improving Electric Vehicle Li-ion Batteries

Lithium (Li-ion) batteries used to power plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles show overall promise to “fuel” these vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but there are areas for improvement to reduce possible environmental and public health impacts, according to a “cradle to grave” study of advanced Li-ion batteries recently completed by Abt Associates for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
