Fireflies Inspire Efficient LEDs

The nighttime twinkling of fireflies has inspired scientists to modify a light-emitting diode (LED) so it is more than one and a half times as efficient as the original. Researchers from Belgium, France, and Canada studied the internal structure of firefly lanterns, the organs on the bioluminescent insects' abdomens that flash to attract mates.

Silvaco ATLAS Device Adopted for Silicon Nanowire Solar Cell Simulations by Tokyo Institute of Technology

Silvaco Japan Co., Ltd. (Silvaco) has announced that it has won a competitive bid to have its ATLAS device simulator used for the development of silicon nanowire solar cells from the Konagai and Miyajima Laboratory in the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Silvaco's ATLAS simulation software will be used at the Fukushima Top-level United center for Renewable Energy research - PhotoVoltaics Innovation (FUTURE-PV) project with additional support provided by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Abbott to Distribute Oasmia’s Nanoparticle Animal Health Products

Under the terms of the expanded agreement, Abbott Animal Health will obtain exclusive license and distribution rights to the products for essentially the entire world. In return, Oasmia will receive an upfront payment and is eligible to receive additional milestone payments of up to $21.5M subject to Oasmia meeting various product development and sales milestones. In addition, in the event either or both of the products are commercialized, Oasmia shall receive tiered royalties on net sales.
