Researchers Use Synthetic Strands of DNA to Create Nanoparticle Clusters and Arrays

Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have combined the artificial strands of DNA to function in two ways: rope-like configurations of the DNA double helix were used to create a strong geometrical framework, and dangling pieces of single-strands of DNA were added to stick nanoparticles in place.

Scientists Create Phase-Shifting Forms of Dynamic Nanomaterials

Scientists belonging to the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) have made significant progress in creating dynamic, phase-shifting forms of nanomaterials by altering the forces of attraction and repulsion between DNA-linked particles. The structure and properties of these nanomaterials could be switched on when required.

SAGE Technology Investment Co., Limited and JHSE Technology Investment Company announced the equity investment in Dais Analytic Corporation, the creation of Dais (Beijing) New Energy Technology Co., Ltd (majority to be owned by Dais) and a $60M contract commitment to seed the acceleration of growth of Dais' nanotechnology materials-based products in Greater China. Dais Analytic is a US-based commercial nanotechnology materials and process company selling its technology in the worldwide energy and water markets.

Coupled Carbon Nanotubes Enable Efficient Signal Transmission from Nanocomponents

Researchers at the Department of Physics and the Swiss Nanoscience Institute at the University of Basel, along with colleagues from ETH Zurich, have developed an efficient method to transmit signals from nanocomponents. In an innovative layout, they connected a nanocomponent to two electrical conductors. This made the electrical signal to uncouple in a very efficient manner.

DFG to Continue Support for Building Tiny Machine-Like Molecules

Great excitement at Kiel University: As the DFG (German Research Foundation) announced today (Thursday, May 21), it will continue to support the research on molecules which function like machines with another 8.9 million EUR. This funding will allow the scientists in Germany's northernmost state to develop new engineering techniques for building tiny machine-like molecules over the next four years.

Transmission Electron Microscope Helps Spot Twin Boundary Defects to Improve Lithium-Ion Batteries

Most people see defects as flaws. A few Michigan Technological University researchers, however, see them as opportunities. Twin boundaries — which are small, symmetrical defects in materials — may present an opportunity to improve lithium-ion batteries. The twin boundary defects act as energy highways and could help get better performance out of the batteries.
