Exosomes Deliver Potent Antioxidant to the Brain to Treat Parkinson's Disease

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have used exosomes -- tiny bubbles of protein and fat produced naturally by cells -- to bypass the body's defenses and deliver a potent antioxidant directly to the brain to treat Parkinson's disease.

Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Could Affect Colon Gut Microbiota

Exposure of a model human colon to metal oxide nanoparticles, at levels that could be present in foods, consumer goods, or treated drinking water, led to multiple, measurable differences in the normal microbial community that inhabits the human gut. The changes observed in microbial metabolism and the gut microenvironment with exposure to nanoparticles could have implications for overall human health, as discussed in an article published in Environmental Engineering Science, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available free on the Environmental Engineering Science website until June 1, 2015.

SEMATECH and Exogenesis Enter Alliance to Commercialize Accelerated Neutral Atom Beam Technology for Nanoelectronics Applications

SEMATECH and Exogenesis Corp. have agreed to a strategic alliance to commercialize Exogenesis' Accelerated Neutral Atom Beam (ANAB) technology and their nAcceltm accelerated particle beam equipment platform. "The chip industry is in the era of atomic scale processing. The applications of ANAB being developed will enable better controlled and more efficient manufacturing and open up new functionality for semiconductor devices," said Ron Goldblatt, Ph.D., SEMATECH CEO and President.

Heidelberg Instruments Introduces MLA Masskless Aligner Systems

Heidelberg Instruments significantly extends its leadership in manufacturing of direct write lithography systems with the launch of MLA Maskless Aigner series of systems. Low to mid volume lithography traditionally consist of creating designs with a CAD software, followed by fabricating or purchasing a photomask and finally using a mask aligner or stepper to transfer the pattern on to the photoresist. For high volume manufacturing of sub-micron design nodes, this traditional process is required.

Powerful Micro Ultrasonic Motor with One Cubic Millimeter Stator

Micro actuators are needed for numerous applications, ranging from mobile and wearable devices to minimally invasive medical devices. However, the limitations associated with their fabrication have restricted their deployment at the one-millimeter scale. The most common electromagnetic motors require the miniaturization of many complicated components such as coils, magnets, and bearings, and exhibit severe torque dissipation due to the scaling. Electrostatic motors enable excellent scalability by using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, but their weak driving force has limited their further development.

Controllable Microspheres Inserted as Flaws into Liquid Crystals

Introducing flaws into liquid crystals by inserting microspheres and then controlling them with electrical fields: that, in a nutshell, is the rationale behind a method that could be exploited for a new generation of advanced materials, potentially useful for optical technologies, electronic displays and e-readers. A team of scientists (including research fellows at the International School for Advanced Studies, SISSA, in Trieste) has just published a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters where they describe just how this approach works and provide the results of a computer simulation.
