Controllable Microspheres Inserted as Flaws into Liquid Crystals

Introducing flaws into liquid crystals by inserting microspheres and then controlling them with electrical fields: that, in a nutshell, is the rationale behind a method that could be exploited for a new generation of advanced materials, potentially useful for optical technologies, electronic displays and e-readers. A team of scientists (including research fellows at the International School for Advanced Studies, SISSA, in Trieste) has just published a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters where they describe just how this approach works and provide the results of a computer simulation.

SENTECH Organizes Seminar on Plasma Process Technology

SENTECH offers leading edge plasma process technology equipment for etching, deposition and thin film measurement instrumentation based on ellipsometry. The advanced SENTECH plasma equipment is based on the inductively coupled plasma source PTSA (planar triple spiral antenna) which was developed by SENTECH for low damage and high rate etching and deposition. The latest product development at SENTECH expands the ICPECVD product line by plasma enhanced ALD systems and in situ monitoring systems.

Novel Reference Biosensor to Aid Development of Calibrated, Standardised Diagnostic Devices

Researchers at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and the University of Tampere, Finland, have developed a novel reference biosensor to aid the development of calibrated and standardised diagnostic devices. The main intention of this work is to have a reproducible system that could be used to normalise and compare data and test new diagnostic devices to validate claims concerning sensitivity and detection limits.

Essential Oil Nanoemulsions Hold Promise for Control of Foodborne Bacteria in Fresh Produce

Nearly half of foodborne illnesses in the U.S. from 1998 through 2008 have been attributed to contaminated fresh produce. Prevention and control of bacterial contamination on fresh produce is critical to ensure food safety. The current strategy remains industrial washing of the product in water containing chlorine. However, due to sanitizer ineffectiveness there is an urgent need to identify alternative antimicrobials, particularly those of natural origin, for the produce industry.
