High Speed Desktop SEM for Large Samples: Phenom World Launches the Phenom XL at Pittcon 2015

Phenom-World is proud to announce the Phenom XL, an addition to the highly successful Phenom desktop SEM product family. The Phenom XL is the world’s first desktop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) that allows full imaging of samples up to 100 mm x 100 mm.

SAPHELY Project Aims to Develop Nanophotonic Technology-Based Device for Early Diagnosis of Cancer

To develop a device based on nanophotonic technology that enables a quick and early diagnosis of different types of cancer –specifically breast, prostate, lung and colorectal– analysing only two or three drops of blood. This is the objective of SAPHELY, a European project funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme, led by the Valencia Nanophotonics Technology Center of the Universitat Politècnica de València. The SYM group of Centre for Molecular Recognition and Technological Development is also participating in the project as the second partner from the UPV.

Researchers Determine Molecular Structure of Nanobody-P Domain Complex for Norovirus

Infection with highly contagious noroviruses, while not usually fatal, can lead to a slew of unpleasant symptoms such as excessive vomiting and diarrhea. Current treatment options are limited to rehydration of the patient. "Additionally, noroviruses come in a variety of constantly evolving strains. This makes the development of an effective vaccine to protect against infection, as well as antiviral therapy to combat already-existing infections, particularly challenging", says Dr. Grant Hansman, a virologist who leads the CHS Research Group on Noroviruses at the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) and Heidelberg University.

Every athlete, no matter what level they compete at, knows that training and practice weigh heavily on the outcome of each competition. But more importantly, are they aware of the rising incidence of incapacitating ‘superbugs’ that live in locker rooms, health clubs, gymnasiums and schools? Microorganisms such as E. coli, Staph, and MRSA can put a serious damper on a person’s ability to perform well in a sport, especially if they are not managed properly. These types of infections can and will spread to others, while possibly leading to season and/or career-ending injuries.

Hybrid Thin Film for Flexible Display Screens

Today, touch screens are everywhere, from smart phones and tablets, to computer monitors, to interactive digital signage and displays. Many touch screens are made of layered thin (billionths of a meter thick) films of indium-tin oxide, an inorganic material that is electrically conductive, which allows electrical signals to travel from the "touch" to the edges of the display, where they are sensed by the device--as well as optically transparent.

MIT.nano is the most ambitious and disruptive construction project in the modern history of MIT. “It won’t be sneaking under anyone’s radar,” says Arne Abramson, MIT’s director of capital projects. So Abramson and his colleagues from MIT Facilities have planned a series of lunchtime talks to give members of the MIT community a window on the details of the construction process. “Because MIT.nano is changing everyone’s patterns drastically in some way or another, we thought it would be a good opportunity to discuss exactly what we’re doing and why we’re doing it,” he says.

A new $10 million gift from Ronald and JoAnne Willens to Northwestern University’s International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN) will establish an interdisciplinary research center that will use advances in nanotechnology to develop new cancer treatments. It will be one of the first centers of its kind in the country.

Fluid-Based Gating Mechanism for Controlling Passage of Materials through Micropores

In nature, pores can continuously control how a living organism absorbs or excretes fluids, vapors and solids in response to its environment; for example, tiny holes invisible to the naked eye called stomata cover a plant's leaves and stems as gated openings through which oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapors are transported in and out during photosynthesis and respiration. And some scientists have proposed that micropores in the tissues of the air sacs of human lungs can open or close to modulate fluid flow based on changes in air pressure or inflammation.
