New Type of Thin Film Protects Surface of Battery Electrodes and Prolongs Battery Life

Lithium-ion batteries are common in consumer electronics. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics, with a high energy density, no memory effect and only a slow loss of charge when not in use. Beyond consumer electronics, lithium-ion batteries have also grown in popularity for military, electric vehicle and aerospace applications.

Seminar Series Shares Progress at MIT.nano

MIT.nano is the most ambitious and disruptive construction project in the modern history of MIT. “It won’t be sneaking under anyone’s radar,” says Arne Abramson, MIT’s director of capital projects. So Abramson and his colleagues from MIT Facilities have planned a series of lunchtime talks to give members of the MIT community a window on the details of the construction process. “Because MIT.nano is changing everyone’s patterns drastically in some way or another, we thought it would be a good opportunity to discuss exactly what we’re doing and why we’re doing it,” he says.

Northwestern University to Establish Ronald and JoAnne Willens Center for Nano Oncology

A new $10 million gift from Ronald and JoAnne Willens to Northwestern University’s International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN) will establish an interdisciplinary research center that will use advances in nanotechnology to develop new cancer treatments. It will be one of the first centers of its kind in the country.

Fluid-Based Gating Mechanism for Controlling Passage of Materials through Micropores

In nature, pores can continuously control how a living organism absorbs or excretes fluids, vapors and solids in response to its environment; for example, tiny holes invisible to the naked eye called stomata cover a plant's leaves and stems as gated openings through which oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapors are transported in and out during photosynthesis and respiration. And some scientists have proposed that micropores in the tissues of the air sacs of human lungs can open or close to modulate fluid flow based on changes in air pressure or inflammation.

Fundamental Advance for Research in Photonic Chips and Optical Communications

A method to selectively enhance or inhibit optical nonlinearities in a chip-scale device has been developed by scientists, led by the University of Sydney. The researchers from the Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems, (CUDOS) based at the University of Sydney published their results in Nature Communications today.

Dunkin' Brands Agrees for Removal of Nanomaterials from Powdered Donuts

Dunkin' Brands, the parent company of the Dunkin' Donuts chain, has agreed to remove titanium dioxide, a whitening agent that is commonly a source of nanomaterials, from all powdered sugar used to make the company's donuts. As a result of this progress, the advocacy group As You Sow has withdrawn a shareholder proposal asking Dunkin' to assess and reduce the risks of using nanomaterials in its food products.
