Simple, Effective Method to Untangle DNA

Researchers have long sought an efficient way to untangle DNA in order to study its structure – neatly unraveled and straightened out – under a microscope. Now, chemists and engineers at KU Leuven, in Belgium, have devised a strikingly simple and effective solution: they inject genetic material into a droplet of water and use a pipet tip to drag it over a glass plate covered with a sticky polymer. The droplet rolls like a ball over the plate, sticking the DNA to the plate surface. The unraveled DNA can then be studied under a microscope. The researchers described the technique in the journal ACS Nano.

Cryo-Electron Tomography Reveals Internal Structure of Ultra-Small Bacteria

Scientists have captured the first detailed microscopy images of ultra-small bacteria that are believed to be about as small as life can get. The research was led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley. The existence of ultra-small bacteria has been debated for two decades, but there hasn't been a comprehensive electron microscopy and DNA-based description of the microbes until now.

High-Resolution Structural Analysis Reveals 3D Nanoarchitecture of Photonic Structures in Limpet’s Shells

The blue-rayed limpet is a tiny mollusk that lives in kelp beds along the coasts of Norway, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and the Canary Islands. These diminutive organisms — as small as a fingernail — might escape notice entirely, if not for a very conspicuous feature: bright blue dotted lines that run in parallel along the length of their translucent shells. Depending on the angle at which light hits, a limpet’s shell can flash brilliantly even in murky water.

Cadence’s Solutions Help Brite Semiconductor Achieve Better Results for 28nm SOC Designs

Cadence Design Systems, Inc., today announced that Brite Semiconductor Corporation, used Cadence® digital implementation and signoff tools to complete four 28nm system-on-chip (SoC) designs and reduced their time to market by three weeks compared to previous design methodologies. By using Cadence tools, Brite Semiconductor was also able to increase performance by up to 20 percent and reduce power consumption by up to 10 percent on these designs.
