Researchers Create UV Light Detector with Zinc Oxide Nanowires for Enhanced Smoke Detection

Researchers at the University of Surrey's Advanced Technology Institute manipulated zinc oxide, producing nanowires from this readily available material to create a ultra-violet light detector which is 10,000 times more sensitive to UV light than a traditional zinc oxide detector.

Highest Values of Piezoresistivity in Electroceramic Material Measured Using Atomic Force Microscopy

ICN2 Oxide Nanoelectronics Group obtains conductivity values for stroncium iridate 250 times higher than in normal conditions, just pressing with nanometric needles. The results, published in Nanoscale, where obtained thanks to the use of the atomic force microscope (AFM) showing that the material could become a good candidate for future applications in sensors and electronics.

Corannulene Molecules May Help Overcome Difficulties in Building Molecular Circuits

Corannulene is a carbon molecule with a unique shape (similar to the better known fullerene) and promising properties. A team of scientists from SISSA and the University of Zurich carried out computer simulations of the molecule’s properties and discovered that it might help overcome the difficulties building molecular circuits (i.e., of the size of molecules). The study has just been published in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics.
