Medicine-Loaded Nanoparticles Hold Promise for Corneal Transplants

There are about 48,000 corneal transplants done each year in the U.S., compared to approximately 16,000 kidney transplants and 2,100 heart transplants[1] [2]. Out of the 48,000 corneal transplants done, 10 percent of them end up in rejection, largely due to poor medication compliance. This costs the health care system and puts undue strain on clinicians, patients and their families.

The major limitation of microscopy is light itself: if we want to see an object smaller than the wavelength of visible light, we cannot use conventional optics. When it comes to imaging cells, the problems compound, since cells often require chemical processing beforehand in order to make them suitable for viewing under a microscope.

Sharing their insights on microscopy and trends in optics, six Nobel Prize winners and two laser luminaries will deliver plenary keynotes at CLEO 2015, the premier international forum for scientific and technical optics, 10 – 15 May 2015, at the San Jose Convention Center, California, USA. Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry, Stefan Hell and Eric Betzig, will join Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Steven Chu and W. E. Moerner, in the opening plenary session dedicated to the topic of Microscopy.
