Micromem Successfully Demonstrates UAV Installation of Mounting System for Power Line Condition Monitoring Sensor Suite

Micromem Technologies Inc. ("Micromem") ("the Company") through its wholly owned subsidiary, Micromem Applied Sensor Technologies Inc. (MAST), is pleased to announce that it has successfully demonstrated the installation of the mounting system that will be used to house its patent pending Power Line Condition Monitoring sensor suite using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

Proof of Concept ERC Funding to Help Develop Microfluidic Platform for Intra-Operative Tumor Immunohistochemistry

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. today announced that Global Unichip Corporation (GUC) achieved first-silicon success integrating tri-band analog front-end (AFE) intellectual property (IP) with WiGig (IEEE 802.11ad), enabling integration of digital logic and analog monolithic die in an advanced 28nm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process.

Touch-Sensitive Flexible Silicone Stickers Worn on the Skin Can Help Control Mobile Devices

Someone wearing a smartwatch can look at a calendar or receive e-mails without having to reach further than their wrist. However, the interaction area offered by the watch face is both fixed and small, making it difficult to actually hit individual buttons with adequate precision. A method currently being developed by a team of computer scientists from Saarbrücken in collaboration with researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in the USA may provide a solution to this problem. They have developed touch-sensitive stickers made from flexible silicone and electrically conducting sensors that can be worn on the skin.

Discovery Could Help Engineer Bacteria to Produce Microbial Nanowires with Synthetic Biology Methods

Scientific debate has been hot lately about whether microbial nanowires, the specialized electrical pili of the mud-dwelling anaerobic bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens, truly possess metallic-like conductivity as its discoverers claim. But now University of Massachusetts Amherst microbiologist Derek Lovley, with postdoctoral researcher Nikhil Malvankar and colleagues, say they have settled the dispute between theoretical and experimental scientists by devising a combination of new experiments and better theoretical modeling.

Flexible Triboelectric Nanogenerator Fabric Harnesses Human Motion to Generate Energy

From light-up shoes to smart watches, wearable electronics are gaining traction among consumers, but these gadgets' versatility is still held back by the stiff, short-lived batteries that are required. These limitations, however, could soon be overcome. In the journal ACS Nano, scientists report the first durable, flexible cloth that harnesses human motion to generate energy. It can also self-charge batteries or supercapacitors without an external power source and make new commercial and medical applications possible.

Since the determination of the molecular structure of myoglobin in 1957, X-ray crystallography has been the defining tool of structural biology, allowing researchers to determine the structure (and hence the function) of tens of thousands of proteins, nucleic acids, and other biological molecules. But the method can only work for molecules that form large, high quality crystals.

NIST Issues New Silver Nanoparticle Reference Material for Studying Associated Environmental, Health and Safety Risks

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has issued a new silver nanoparticle reference material to support researchers studying potential environmental, health and safety risks associated with the nanoparticles, which are being incorporated in a growing number of consumer and industrial products for their antimicrobial properties. The new NIST test material is believed to be the first of its kind to stabilize the highly reactive silver particles in a freeze-dried, polymer coated, nanoparticle cake for long-term storage.

SUNY Poly CNSE and Israel’s Metro450 Consortium Partner to Develop Standard Calibration Wafers

Supporting Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's vision for New York State's continued leadership in the global high-tech economy, SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY Poly CNSE) and Israel’s Metro450 consortium today jointly announced plans to develop and produce Standard Calibration Wafers (SCW) for use with 300mm and 450mm metrology and process tools. The initiative will generate $2.9 million in investment and support more than 100 jobs in New York and Israel.
