South Dakota Scientists to Examine Living Cells at Biochemical Spatio-temporal NeTwork Resource

Scientists in South Dakota will examine living cells at a molecular level to find out how cells become cancerous, how viruses attack animals and humans and how plants can capture more nitrogen through a new collaborative research center called Biochemical Spatio-temporal NeTwork Resource (BioSNTR).

NSF Awards $837,000 for Development of Nanoscale Sensor to Monitor Climate Change Effects on Trees

Serving as a testament to the far-reaching impact of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s commitment to maintaining New York State’s global leadership in nanotechnology innovation, SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY Poly CNSE) today announced the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $837,000 to support development of a first of its kind nanoscale sensor to monitor the effects of climate change on trees.

Toshiba and SK hynix Enter Agreement to Jointly Develop Nano Imprint Lithography

Toshiba today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with SK hynix on joint development of Nano Imprint Lithography (NIL). Engineers from the two companies will start development of basic technologies for the process at Toshiba’s Yokohama Complex in Yokohama, Japan in April this year, targeting practical use in 2017. Today’s announcement builds on an MOU that the companies signed in December last year.

Acoustic Tweezers Manipulate Protein Crystals for X-ray Crystallography

A device for precisely positioning small objects using acoustic waves has now been used to position fragile protein crystals a few micrometers or less in size in the path of a crystallography X-ray beam. This technique will make it possible to collect data on previously intractable samples and will expand the scope of what is now possible with X-ray crystallography.

Researchers Successfully Treat Brain Cancer in Rats Using Biodegradable Nanoparticles

Despite improvements in the past few decades with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, a predictably curative treatment for glioma does not yet exist. New insights into specific gene mutations that arise in this often deadly form of brain cancer have pointed to the potential of gene therapy, but it's very difficult to effectively deliver toxic or missing genes to cancer cells in the brain.

Researchers Develop Anisotropic Hydrogel Using Electrostatic Repulsion Between Nanosheets

The joint research group led by Takuzo Aida, director, Emergent Soft Matter Function Research Group, Center for Emergent Matter Science, RIKEN (also a professor at the School of Engineering, University of Tokyo), Yasuhiro Ishida, leader, Emergent Bioinspired Soft Matter Research Team, RIKEN, and Takayoshi Sasaki, fellow, International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics, NIMS, successfully developed a material that expresses a unique mechanical property by arranging oxide nanosheets, that electrostatically repel each other, in the direction perpendicular to a magnetic field, and by confining a three-dimensional nano-network structure in a water-swollen gel material, hydrogel.

Berkeley Lab Researchers Develop Nano-Sized Optical Antenna Capable of Enhancing Spontaneous Light Emission

Berkeley Lab researchers have developed a nano-sized optical antenna that can greatly enhance the spontaneous emission of light from atoms, molecules and semiconductor quantum dots. This advance opens the door to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that can replace lasers for short-range optical communications, including optical interconnects for microchips, plus a host of other potential applications.
