Handheld Raman Scanner Could Aid in Complete Removal of Brain Tumors

Cancerous brain tumors are notorious for growing back despite surgical attempts to remove them — and for leading to a dire prognosis for patients. But scientists are developing a new way to try to root out malignant cells during surgery so fewer or none get left behind to form new tumors. The method, reported in the journal ACS Nano, could someday vastly improve the outlook for patients.

Scientists Use Copper as Catalyst for Production of Silicon Solar Cell Wafer

In making a solar cell, scientists etch nanoscale spikes into a silicon wafer in order to maximize its surface area and consequently to maximize the amount of sunlight to reach it. Metal particles have been used as a catalyst in this process because etching is much accelerated near metal particles.

PEN Inc. (PEN) today confirmed the closing of the previously announced combination of Applied Nanotech Holdings, Inc. (Applied Nanotech) and NanoHoldings, Inc., the parent company of Nanofilm, Ltd. (Nanofilm), to form the new publicly traded company. Scott Rickert, the CEO of Nanofilm, is now the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of PEN.

Characterizing Effects of Biological Aggregation on Heating and Imaging of Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Biological aggregation is a critical, yet often overlooked factor in the medical application of nanoparticles. Here we systematically characterize the effects of aggregation on both radiofrequency heating and magnetic resonance image (MRI) contrast of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), including detailed analysis of the aggregate morphologies based on quasi-fractal descriptions.

Researchers Use Vertical Nanowires to Create More Varied Surfaces Where Artificial Membranes can Form

Vertical nanowires could be used for detailed studies of what happens on the surface of cells. The findings are important for pharmaceuticals research, among other applications. A group of researchers from Lund University in Sweden have managed to make artificial cell membranes form across a large number of vertical nanowires, known as a 'nano-forest'.
