University of Houston physicists have discovered a new thermoelectric material offering high performance at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 300 degrees Celsius, or about 573 degrees Fahrenheit.

Novel Method to Make Flexible Thin Film Full of Nanopores

While flexible gadgets such as "electronic skin" and roll-up touch screens are moving ever closer to reality, their would-be power sources are either too wimpy or too stiff. But that's changing fast. Scientists have developed a new device that's far thinner than paper, can flex and bend, and store enough energy to provide critical back-up power for portable electronics. Their report appears in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Engineered Bacterium Includes Added Pair of DNA ‘Letters’

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have engineered a bacterium whose genetic material includes an added pair of DNA "letters," or bases, not found in nature. The cells of this unique bacterium can replicate the unnatural DNA bases more or less normally, for as long as the molecular building blocks are supplied.

Microfluidic System for Cancer Detection Wins PERL Prize

Last night the start-up Lunaphore, which is developing a rapid and precise system for cancer detection, won the PERL Prize (Entrepreneurial Prize for the Lausanne region). Awarding 50,000 Swiss francs to the winner, the prize is intended for innovative start-ups in the region. Another start-up from campus, G-Therapeutics, won the "coup de coeur du jury," receiveing 10,000 Swiss francs.
