Novel Low-Energy Focused Ion Beam Microscope Utilizes Lithium Ion as Source

Microscopes don't exactly lie, but their limitations affect the truths they can tell. For example, scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) simply can't see materials that don't conduct electricity very well, and their high energies can actually damage some types of samples.

ON Semiconductor Offers Newly Qualified Circuit Blocks on ONC18 180 nm Process Technology

ON Semiconductor, driving energy efficient innovations, has announced the availability of new qualified intellectual property (IP) on its proprietary ONC18 180 nanometer (nm) process technology. The newly qualified circuit blocks will help ON Semiconductor’s foundry (GDS2) interface customers minimize the risk of the need for silicon re-spins and therefore help reduce development costs and shorten time to market for new designs.

DNA Clamp Nanoswitches Offer a New Tool for Identifying Increased Risk of Cancer

An international research team has built molecular “clamps” out of DNA that offer a powerful new tool for identifying individuals with an increased risk of cancer. The clamp is capable of detecting genetic mutations, associated with cancer and other genetic diseases, with better specificity and affinity than more traditional techniques.

Nano Test Tube Created Out of HIV Virion

An interdisciplinary team of scientists from KU Leuven in Belgium has developed a new technique to examine how proteins interact with each other at the level of a single HIV viral particle. The technique allows scientists to study the life-threatening virus in detail and makes screening potential anti-HIV drugs quicker and more efficient. The technique can also be used to study other diseases.

Self-Supported Electrodes for Carbon Nanotube Electrochemical Capacitors Show Promise as Energy Sources

The editors of the new Open Access journal Materials for Renewable and Sustainable Energy have elected the Best Paper among those published in 2013. The winning paper is "Self-standing electrochemical double layer capacitors for operation in severe temperature conditions," by authors Pierre-Louis Taberna and colleagues at the Université Paul Sabatier and at Thales Research and Technology, France.

The Cystinosis Research Foundation raised a record $2.3 million at its annual fundraiser for new research to improve cystinosis treatments and continue progress to cure the rare metabolic disease. Cystinosis destroys the body’s organs and afflicts about 2,000 people, mostly children, worldwide.
