German Physicists Haider, Rose and Urban Receive Award for Inventing Subatomic Precision Microscope

The sixth annual BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Basic Sciences category goes to German physicists Maximilian Haider, Harald Rose and Knut Urban for "greatly enhancing the resolving power of electron microscopy by developing aberration-corrected electron optics, a breakthrough enabling subatomic precision."

Researchers Create New DNA Molecular Motor for Transporting Nanoparticle Along Carbon Nanotube Length

Another recent nanotechnology research advance in line with the theme of next month’s “Foresight Technical Conference: Integration“, integrating nanodevices and nanomaterials into more complex systems, is the combination of a DNA walker motor, RNA fuel, a carbon nanotube track, and a nanoparticle cargo, all mimicking the biological molecular machinery of protein motors using ATP fuel to walk along microtubule tracks (also made of protein) inside cells.

MEMS Device Company, Motion Engine, to Continue Development of Motion Sensing Enabled Systems Technology

Tactile Sensors Created From Composite Films of Carbon Nanotubes and Silver Nanoparticles

From the world of nanotechnology we’ve gotten electronic skin, or e-skin, and electronic eye implants or e-eyes. Now we’re on the verge of electronic whiskers. Researchers with Berkeley Lab and the University of California (UC) Berkeley have created tactile sensors from composite films of carbon nanotubes and silver nanoparticles similar to the highly sensitive whiskers of cats and rats. These new e-whiskers respond to pressure as slight as a single Pascal, about the pressure exerted on a table surface by a dollar bill. Among their many potential applications is giving robots new abilities to “see” and “feel” their surrounding environment.
