Cypress to Manufacture ROICs Based on S8 Mixed-Signal 130-nm Flash-Based SONOS Technology for L-3 Cincinnati Electronics

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. today announced it has been selected by L-3 Cincinnati Electronics, a division of L-3 Communications, as a supply partner to manufacture its Readout Integrated Circuits (ROICs). L-3 CE will design and manufacture its state-of-the-art ROICs for its cooled infrared detectors using Cypress’s proprietary process technology at the Cypress Foundry Solutions wafer fabrication facility in Bloomington, Minnesota. L-3 CE selected Cypress based on the potential for significant manufacturing yield enhancements for large-die ROIC devices.

Researchers Model Explains Macroscale Fluid Convection Induced by Plasmonic Nanostructures

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a new theoretical model that explains macroscale fluid convection induced by plasmonic (metal) nanostructures. Their model demonstrates the experimentally observed convection velocities of the order of micrometers per second for an array of gold bowtie nanoantennas (BNAs) coupled to an optically absorptive indium-tin-oxide (ITO) substrate.

Researchers Observe Transformation from Closely Packed Nanorod Layer to Semiconductor Thin Film in Real Time

Research teams at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and at the University of Limerick, Ireland, have discovered a novel solid state reaction which lets kesterite grains grow within a few seconds and at relatively low temperatures. For this reaction, they exploit a transition from a metastable wurtzite compound in the form of nanorods to the more stable kesterite compound.

Researchers Develop Process Friendly Technique for Cooling Microprocessor Chips Through Carbon Nanotubes

"Cool it!" That's a prime directive for microprocessor chips and a promising new solution to meeting this imperative is in the offing. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have developed a "process friendly" technique that would enable the cooling of microprocessor chips through carbon nanotubes.

Researchers Engineer New Heart Tissue Using Neonatal Rat Heart Cells and Carbon Nanofiber

In the U.S., someone suffers a heart attack every 34 seconds — their heart is starved of oxygen and suffers irreparable damage. Engineering new heart tissue in the laboratory that could eventually be implanted into patients could help, and scientists are reporting a promising approach tested with rat cells. They published their results on growing cardiac muscle using a scaffold containing carbon nanofibers in the ACS journal Biomacromolecules.

Elena Conti and Denis Le Bihan Receive 2014 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine

The 2014 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE FOR MEDICINE is awarded to the Italian biochemist Elena Conti, Director of the Department of Structural Cell Biology at the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich (Germany) and to Denis Le Bihan, the French medical doctor, physicist and Director of NeuroSpin, an institute at the French Nuclear and Renewable Energy Commission (CEA) at Saclay near Paris.

Pixelligent Technologies Receives SBIR Grant for Developing Nanoadditives for OLED Lighting Applications

Pixelligent Technologies announced today that it has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant by the Department of Energy (DOE). The nine-month, $150,000 program will enable Pixelligent to accelerate the development of its nanoadditives for use in OLED lighting. As part of this program, Pixelligent will partner with OLEDWorks LLC, a leading OLED lighting company.
