New NIOSH Recommendations for Controlling Worker Exposures to Nanomaterials

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) issued new recommendations on Nov. 8 for controlling worker exposures to engineered nanomaterials during the manufacture and industrial use of those materials. The recommendations are based on technologies now applied in the various industries that use nanomaterials, and on control methods that have been shown to be effective in reducing occupational exposures in other industries.

High Pitch and Frequencies Increase Efficiency of Solar Cells Containing Nanorod Clusters

The high frequencies and pitch found in pop and rock music cause vibrations that enhanced energy generation in solar cells containing a cluster of ‘nanorods’, leading to a 40 per cent increase in efficiency of the solar cells.

PHI Optics Receives $250,000 Seed Funding for Development of Optical Microscopes

Phi Optics, Inc., a company that develops imaging solutions for life sciences and bio-pharma researchers, has secured $250,000 in seed funding from venture capital funds. The seed series was led by Champaign-based Serra Ventures and includes New Jersey-based Newport Holdings LP and Champaign-based Illinois Ventures LLC.

Leading Research Institutes and Charitable Foundations Contract with imec for Neuroscience Research

Nanoelectronics research center imec announced today that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and University College London (UCL) have committed 4.2 million Euro ($5.5 million) in R&D collaboration contracting with imec to develop and manufacture a state-of-the-art sensor array for recording neural activity in animal brains.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. is broadening its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of two new 940 nm high-speed infrared emitting diodes in compact 3.2 mm by 2.51 mm by 1.2 mm clear SMD side-view packages. Based on GaAIAs surface emitter and multi quantum well (MQW) technologies, the VSMY14940 and VSMB14940 combine high radiant intensity and optical power with fast switching times.
