OmniVision Selects Berkeley Design Automation’s AFS Platform for CMOS Image Sensor Verification

Berkeley Design Automation, Inc., provider of the world’s fastest nanometer circuit verification, today announced that OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, has selected the company’s Analog FastSPICE (AFS) Platform for block-level characterization and full-circuit verification of their single-chip CMOS image sensors for consumer and commercial applications.

NSF Grant Supports Cornell Endeavor to Improve Scalable Nanomanufacturing

Making large quantities of reliable, inexpensive nanoparticles for batteries, solar cells, catalysts and other energy applications has proven challenging due to manufacturing limits. A Cornell research team is working to improve such processes with a $1.5 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support scalable nanomanufacturing and device integration.

Programmable DNA Glue Guides Gel Bricks to Self-Assemble into Complex Structures

A team of researchers at the Wyss Institute of Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University has found a way to self-assemble complex structures out of gel “bricks” smaller than a grain of salt. The new method could help solve one of the major challenges in tissue engineering: creating injectable components that self-assemble into intricately structured, biocompatible scaffolds at an injury site to help regrow human tissues.

Selective Response of Vapour Molecules Found in Nanostructures of Butterfly Wings

Now research by the University of Exeter, in collaboration with General Electric (GE) Global Research Centre, University at Albany and Air Force Research Laboratory, and funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), has discovered that the physical structure and surface chemistry of the Morpho butterfly’s wings provides surprising properties that could offer a variety of applications ranging from photonic security tags to self cleaning surfaces and protective clothing and to industrial sensors.

New Technique Overcomes Limitations of Light Microscopy

Scientists at the Campus Vienna Biocenter (Austria) have found a way to overcome some of the limitations of light microscopy. Applying the new technique, they can record the activity of a worm’s brain with high temporal and spatial resolution, ultimately linking brain anatomy to brain function. The journal Nature Methods publishes the details in its current issue.

U.S. DoD Funds Laboratory Study on Networks of Nano-Electrical Mechanical Devices

Understanding complex networked systems, from nanomachines to nation-states, and learning how to control them are the aims of two new projects led by researchers at the University of California, Davis, Complexity Sciences Center. Each project is funded with $6.25 million over five years from the U.S. Department of Defense's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative.
