Promising Environmentally-Friendly Electronic Alloy for Next-Generation ‘Phase-Change’ Memory Devices

A new, environmentally-friendly electronic alloy consisting of 50 aluminum atoms bound to 50 atoms of antimony may be promising for building next-generation "phase-change" memory devices, which may be the data-storage technology of the future, according to a new paper published in the journal Applied Physics Letters, which is produced by AIP Publishing.

Spider Silk Coated With Carbon Nanotubes Conducts Electricity

Eden Steven, a physicist at Florida State University’s MagLab facility, discovered that simple methods can result in surprising and environmentally friendly high-tech outcomes during his experiments with spider silk and carbon nanotubes, the results of which are now published in the online research journal Nature Communications.

RIPE Places Additional Purchase Order for LiqTech’s SiC Membranes

LiqTech International, Inc. (“LiqTech”) is pleased to announce that it has received an additional purchase order from RIPE (Huzhou), a Chinese membrane system integrator. The purchase order was the third placed by RIPE in 2013 – significant order sizes of 256 sq. meters, 256 sq. meters and latest 480 sq. meters of membrane product. The three membrane systems ordered were for the same end-user (one of the largest dairy producers in the world) to treat agriculture wastewater.

Researchers Explore the Microworld Using Haptic Optical Tweezers

What if you could reach through a microscope to touch and feel the microscopic structures under the lens? In a breakthrough that may usher in a new era in the exploration of the worlds that are a million times smaller than human beings, researchers at Université Pierre et Marie Curie in France have unveiled a new technique that allows microscope users to manipulate samples using a technology known as "haptic optical tweezers."

UC Student Presents Studies on Engineered Nanoparticles-Biofilm Interaction at ACS Conference

Hengye Jing, University of Cincinnati environmental engineering doctoral student, presented his studies on the interaction between engineered nanoparticles (NPs) and biofilm. Biofilm is a group of microorganisms in which cells stick to each other on a surface and these cells are usually embedded within a self-produced cluster of extracellular polymeric substance (or EPS—often referred to as slime). He presented research at the American Chemical Society conference Sept. 8-12.

Bruker Acquires Pioneer of Multiphoton Fluorescence Microscopy, Prairie Technologies

Bruker Corporation today announced that it has acquired Prairie Technologies, Inc. (Prairie), a provider of life science fluorescence microscopy products. The acquisition strengthens Bruker’s position in life science markets, adding to the Bruker Nano Surfaces Division’s existing life science atomic force microscopy (Bio-AFM) systems.

Researchers Discover Size-Dependence in Nanotube Transport

Like a pea going through a straw, tiny molecules can pass through microscopic cylinders known as nanotubes. This could potentially be used to select molecules according to size — for example, to purify water by allowing water molecules to pass through while blocking salt or other substances.

Compact Voice Coil Positioning Stage From H2W

The engineers at H2W have developed our most compact voice coil positioning stage to date. The customer for this stage requested that it fit within a volume of 1.6 cubic inches (40 cubic mm) cube volume. The application required an ultra-compact stage due to space restrictions in their auto-focus mechanism.
