Novel Sponge Developed at ORNL Absorbs and Sheds Oxygen Atoms

Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a new oxygen “sponge” that can easily absorb or shed oxygen atoms at low temperatures. Materials with these novel characteristics would be useful in devices such as rechargeable batteries, sensors, gas converters and fuel cells.

Nanojems Engraves First Million Digits of Pi on Sapphire Crystal with Gold

Nanojems, a Reno-based microfabrication firm, has just engraved the first million digits of pi on sapphire crystal with gold. The engraving contains 200 times more digits than any other known engraving and is a landmark feat for the never-ending constant. The characters are so small that two digits can be etched on the end of a human hair.

Real-Time Manipulation of Nuclear Spin Noise May Enable New Nano-Scale Imaging Techniques

Basel Physicists in collaboration with Dutch researchers have demonstrated a new method for polarizing nuclear spins in extremely small samples. By Monitoring and controlling spin fluctuations, the method may provide a route for enhancing the resolution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the nanometer-scale, allowing researchers to make 3D images of smaller objects than ever before. The results have been published in the journal «Nature Physics».
