Polarized Light Selectively Melts Nanofibers Containing Gold Nanorods

Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a way to melt or “weld” specific portions of polymers by embedding aligned nanoparticles within the materials. Their technique, which melts fibers along a chosen direction within a material, may lead to stronger, more resilient nanofibers and materials.

SimpLight Nanoelectronics Achieves First Silicon Success for LTE Modem Chip

Tensilica®, Inc. today announced that SimpLight Nanoelectronics, Ltd. of China has achieved first silicon success for their LTE modem chip SL3000 for low-power handsets and tablets. SimpLight used Tensilica's ATLAS reference platform, which implements a complete, fully programmable modem subsystem for the LTE Layer 1 PHY.

Iterative Approach for Metadynamics to Detect Key Structures of Platinum Nanoclusters

Physicists have gained new insights into the inner intricacies of the structural variations of metallic nanoclusters. This work by Luca Pavan, Cono Di Paola and Francesca Baletto from King's College London, UK, is about to be published in EPJ D. It takes us one step closer to tailoring on-demand characteristics of metallic nanoparticles. Indeed, the geometric structure of these nanoclusters influences their chemical and physical properties, which differ from those of individual molecules and of bulk metals.

New Technology for Magnetic Cooling of Chips with Lesser Environmental Impact

Luis Hueso, the CICnanoGUNE researcher, together with researchers from the University of Cambridge, among others, has developed a new technology in the magnetic cooling of chips based on the straining of materials. Compared with the current technologies, this advance enables the impact on the environment to be lessened. The work has been published recently in the prestigious journal Nature Materials.

Injectable Hydrogel Helps Growth of New Heart Muscle Tissue

University of California, San Diego bioengineers have demonstrated in a study in pigs that a new injectable hydrogel can repair damage from heart attacks, help the heart grow new tissue and blood vessels, and get the heart moving closer to how a healthy heart should. The results of the study were published Feb. 20 in Science Translational Medicine and clear the way for clinical trials to begin this year in Europe. The gel is injected through a catheter without requiring surgery or general anesthesia -- a less invasive procedure for patients.
