Successful Real-Time Analysis of Polymer Wrapping Process around Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Dr. Masanobu Naito, a Principal Researcher of the TU-NIMS Joint Research Center (TU: Tianjin University) and of the NIMS Environmental Remediation Materials Unit, and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology succeeded for the first time in the world in real-time analysis of the “polymer wrapping” process by which polymers (polymers of molecules) wrap around single-walled carbon nanotubes, which are a next-generation material.

CardioNet Partners With Nanoelectronics Research Center to Develop Cardiac Monitoring Products

Gold Nanorods Promise a New Method of Harvesting Sun's Energy

A new method of harvesting the Sun's energy is emerging, thanks to scientists at UC Santa Barbara's Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Materials. Though still in its infancy, the research promises to convert sunlight into energy using a process based on metals that are more robust than many of the semiconductors used in conventional methods. The researchers' findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Scientists Manufacture Highly Efficient LEDs from Silicon Nanocrystals

Silicon nanocrystals have a size of a few nanometers and possess a high luminous potential. Scientists of KIT and the University of Toronto/Canada have now succeeded in manufacturing silicon-based light-emitting diodes (SiLEDs). They are free of heavy metals and can emit light in various colors. The team of chemists, materials researchers, nanoscientists, and opto-electronic experts presents its development in the “Nano Letters” journal (DOI: 10.1021/nl3038689).

Knowledge of Nanoparticle Formation Needed to Understand Interactions within the Climate System

Atmospheric aerosol particles affect our climate by slowing down the global warming. After years of studying the international research group led by Academy Professor Markku Kulmala from the University of Helsinki, Department of Physics, Finland has succeeded in developing measurement techniques that allow detection of aerosol nucleation starting from the formation of clusters from vapor molecules, and the growth of these clusters into aerosol particles. The results are published in the prestigious Science magazine on 22th of February 2013.

Polarized Light Selectively Melts Nanofibers Containing Gold Nanorods

Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a way to melt or “weld” specific portions of polymers by embedding aligned nanoparticles within the materials. Their technique, which melts fibers along a chosen direction within a material, may lead to stronger, more resilient nanofibers and materials.
