Carbon Nanotubes Transport Protons Faster than Bulk Water

Researchers from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have demonstrated for the first time that carbon nanotubes, whose diameter measure almost eight-tenths of a nanometer, are capable of transporting protons in a more rapid manner than bulk water, by an order of magnitude.

Scientists Unravel Mechanism Behind Nanoparticle Growth into Cubic Shape

Use of nanoparticles in many applications, e.g. for catalysis, relies on the surface area of the particles. Now scientists show how originally spherical nucleus can transform into cube with high surface-to-volume ratio. These nanocubes are available to be used in practice, and may interest many designers of new materials. The research has recently been reported in ACS Nano.

Scientists Use Microspheres to Fabricate Artificial Molecules

A new method to develop complexly arranged tiny objects combined with microspheres has been discovered by a group of scientists at IBM Research Zurich and ETH Zurich. These tiny objects are only a few micrometres in size and are formed in a modular manner, allowing their design to be programmed so that every single component displays a wide variety of physical properties. This is followed by introducing the micro-objects into a solution through a very simple step after the fabrication process.

Scientists Observe 100-Fold More Heat Transfer than Classical Predictions at Nanoscale Distances

In a new study recently published in Nature Nanotechnology, researchers from Columbia Engineering, Cornell, and Stanford have demonstrated heat transfer can be made 100 times stronger than has been predicted, simply by bringing two objects extremely close—at nanoscale distances—without touching. Led by Columbia Engineering’s Michal Lipson and Stanford Engineering’s Shanhui Fan, the team used custom-made ultra-high-precision micro-mechanical displacement controllers to achieve heat transfer using light at the largest magnitude reported to date between two parallel objects.

Rice University Professor to be Honored with Two Coveted Nanotechnology Awards

Pulickel Ajayan, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering and founding chair of the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering, has been chosen to receive two major honors in his field: the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award in Nanotechnology from the Houston Technology Center and the 2016 NANOSMAT Prize.

New Reference Samples Allow CD-AFM Tip Calibration with Uncertainty of Below 1nm

As the sizes of computer chips in electronic devices continue to shrink, traditional measurement tools (e.g., microscopes utilizing visible light) are no longer capable of examining surface features, which can be just tens of nanometers. In order to examine these tiny features, researchers use tools such as the critical dimension atomic force microscope (CD-AFM), which measures features by dragging its ¡Ö10 nm tip across the subject¡¯s surface much like a record player needle pulling across a record¡¯s grooves.

Scientists Explore Environmental Impact of Anti-Odor Athletic Clothes Containing Silver Nanoparticles

Anti-odor athletic clothes containing silver nanoparticles have gained a foothold among exercise buffs, but questions have arisen over how safe and effective they are. Now scientists report in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology that silver nanoparticles and coatings do wash off of commercially available garments in the laundry but at negligible levels. They also found that even low concentrations of silver on clothing kept microbes at bay.
