Novel Method for Controlling Particle Motion on Two-Dimensional Materials

Researchers from MIT and other institutions have discovered a new phenomenon of the behavior of plasmons (a kind of quasiparticle) as they move accross tiny ribbons of two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). These materials possess a hexagonal structure similar to chicken wire.

MESA+ Researcher Develops Special Nano Plates for Solar Fuels

Solar fuels are clean fuels harvested from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, and they provide a way of storing solar energy, for instance in hydrogen or hydrocarbons. However efficiency is still a concern for this technology. Kasper Wenderich of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Twente has created special nanosized plates with platinum particles on them to speed up the chemical conversion. As part of his PhD thesis, he determined the reason why the reduced effect of these particles is lower than generally expected.

Extracting Graphene and Contaminants from Water by Shining Light

A simple and effective technique to extract graphene, and the contaminants and toxins they from water using light has been developed by researchers at Monash University. The research work is being published in Nanoscale, the journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The new findings could considerably influence large volume water purification.

Inexpensive Method to Analyze Force Responses of Thousands of Similar Molecules Simultaneously

From the tension of contracting muscle fibers to hydrodynamic stresses within flowing blood, molecules within our bodies are subject to a wide variety of mechanical forces that directly influence their form and function. By analyzing the responses of single molecules under conditions where they experience such forces we can develop a better understanding of many biological processes, and potentially, develop more accurately acting drugs. But up until now experimental analysis of single molecule interactions under force have been expensive, tedious and difficult to perform because it requires use of sophisticated equipment, such as an atomic force microscope or optical tweezers, which only permit analysis of one molecule at a time.

Researchers have developed a new technique for killing bacteria in seconds using highly porous gold nanodisks and light, according to a study published today in Optical Materials Express, a journal published by The Optical Society. The method could one day help hospitals treat some common infections without using antibiotics, which could help reduce the risk of spreading antibiotics resistance.

Eggshell Nanoparticle-Infused Bioplastics Ideally Suited for Packaging Materials

Eggshells, when placed on end, can be as strong as the arches holding the ancient Roman aqueducts. However they easily crack in the middle, prompting us to throw them away. Researchers suggest that adding tiny eggshell pieces to bioplastic can create a biodegradable packaging material, a first-of-its-kind, which bends but does not break so easily.

Nanostrain Project Aims to Exploit Commercial Opportunities Arising from Controlled Strain in Nanoscale Piezoelectrics

The more powerful the phone, the higher the demand on the battery. This can result in frequent charging, increasing the inconvenience for users and restricting the performance of the phone. A possible solution could be the development of new transistor materials that use less power, and prolong the battery’s life. One candidate materials is a piezoelectric material, which can change shape or become 'strained' after voltage is applied. This feature can be utilized to develop digital switches, which provide better speeds and low power consumption, along with a reduction in size.
