Insertion of Calcium Atoms Causes Graphene to Exhibit Superconductivity

Graphene is a single-atomic carbon sheet with a hexagonal honeycomb network. Graphene’s electrons take a unique electronic state, referred to as Dirac-cone, where they like they have no mass. This enables them to move rapidly, and gives graphene a high electrical conductivity. The flow of electrons without mass and resistance in graphene is significant as it demonstrates potential for a futuristic high-speed nanoelectronic device.

AGBT Meeting 2016: Proof-of-Concept Data for Hyb & Seq Chemistry Presented by NanoString Technologies

NanoString Technologies, Inc., a provider of life science tools for translational research and molecular diagnostic products, today presented the first proof-of-concept data for its novel massively parallel single molecule sequencing chemistry, Hyb & SeqTM, at the Advances in Genome Biology and Technology (AGBT) Meeting being held in Orlando, Florida. Hyb & Seq chemistry is based on NanoString's proprietary optical barcoding technology with several unique features giving it the potential to provide highly accurate data with a simple, efficient workflow.

Critical Step Towards Development of New Nanotechnologies that Integrate Light with Electronics

Heterostructures formed by different three-dimensional semiconductors form the foundation for modern electronic and photonic devices. Now, University of Washington scientists have successfully combined two different ultrathin semiconductors — each just one layer of atoms thick and roughly 100,000 times thinner than a human hair — to make a new two-dimensional heterostructure with potential uses in clean energy and optically-active electronics. The team, led by Boeing Distinguished Associate Professor Xiaodong Xu, announced its findings in a paper published Feb. 12 in the journal Science.

The work provides new insights into the structure of telomeres and how they are maintained.

PSI Researchers Fabricate Nanoscale Matterhorn Models Using 3D Photolithography

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute have produced large numbers of detailed models of the Matterhorn, each one less than a tenth of a millimetre in size. With this, they demonstrated how 3-D objects so delicate could be mass-produced. Materials whose surface is covered with a pattern of such tiny 3-D structures often have special properties. What nature has exploited for so long could be instructive for a number of industrial applications. Many snakes glide over sand aided by 3-D structures on their skin that significantly reduce friction. Along the same lines, machine parts could be furnished with a comparable structure, thereby minimizing wear and tear.
