Nanostructured Membranes Could Help Stop Growth of Dendrites in Lithium Batteries

Rechargeable lithium metal batteries have been known for four decades to offer energy storage capabilities far superior to today’s workhorse lithium-ion technology that powers our smartphones and laptops. But these batteries are not in common use today because, when recharged, they spontaneously grow treelike bumps called dendrites on the surface of the negative electrode.

Wrapping Silicon Sawdust in a Graphene Cage Improves Lithium-Ion Battery Performance

For years, scientists have been trying to use silicon to produce a lithium-ion battery anode capable of storing 10 times more energy than the existing commercial anodes, and making smaller and lighter batteries with superior performance. Previously there had been two major issues; silicon particles swell in size, and crack and break during the charging stage; and when they react with the electrolyte, they form a coating that decreases their performance.
