Manchester University Scientists Observe Self-Rotating Graphene

The question at the University of Manchester regarding interaction in two-dimensional (2D) materials is whether self-rotation occurs in heterostructures if various crystals are clubbed together, such as graphene on boron nitride. It was observed that perfect stacking between boron nitride and graphene occurs, and when the heterostructural layers are disturbed, the crystals undergo self-rotation and retain the ideal configuration. This effect was known at the nanoscale, but it was not seen on larger scales until the recent findings, published in Nature Communications.

Scientists Provide Accurate Description of van der Waals Forces Between Nanoscale Objects

The dynamics of the solar system and the attraction between celestial bodies, such as the moon and the Earth, are all governed by gravitational forces. Similar to these gravitational forces, attractive forces exist between objects at the nanoscale. These are known as van der Waals forces, which are ever-present in nature and are believed to play a major role in establishing the function, stability, and structure of various systems across the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science.

VIB Teams up with Oxford Nanopore Technologies to Develop Nanopore Sensing Technology

VIB is proud to announce that the lab of Han Remaut (VIB/Vrije Universiteit Brussels) has teamed up with Oxford Nanopore Technologies for the development of nanopore sensing technology. VIB pioneered work on a protein nanopore, CsgG, which was developed into a sensing nanopore by Oxford Nanopore and the latest version will soon feature as ‘R9’ in the MinIONTM handheld DNA sequencer and the PromethIONTM system.

Innovative Method for Making Uniform, Highly Active Gold Nanoparticle Catalysts for Fuel Cells

The successful future of fuel cells relies on improving the performance of the catalysts they use. Gold nanoparticles have been cited as an ideal solution, but creating a uniform, useful catalyst has proven elusive. However, a team of researchers at Kyushu University's International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) devised a method for using a new type of catalyst support.

Breakthrough Nanoparticle Technology to Study Structure of Membrane Proteins in Lipid Environment

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have developed a nanoparticle technology that can be used to stabilise membrane proteins so that their structure can be studied in a lipid environment. The method, described in Nature Methods, makes it possible to access drug targets that previously could not be investigated and therefore potentially allows for the development of novel drugs, therapeutic antibodies and vaccines.
