Scientists Create 3D Image of Food on Nanometer Scale for First Time

Scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland have, for the first time, created a 3D image of food on the nanometer scale. The method the scientists used is called Ptychographic X-ray computed tomography. It has promising prospects as a more detailed knowledge of the structure of complex food systems could potentially save the food industry large sums of money and reduce food waste that occurs because of faulty production.

Agriculture Secretary Announces Over $5.2 Million Investment to Support Nanotechnology Research

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced an investment of more than $5.2 million to support nanotechnology research at 11 universities. The universities will research ways nanotechnology can be used to improve food safety, enhance renewable fuels, increase crop yields, manage agricultural pests, and more. The awards were made through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), the nation's premier competitive, peer-reviewed grants program for fundamental and applied agricultural sciences.

Reporter Nanoparticles Help Differentiate Between Drug-Resistant and Drug-Sensitive Tumors

Being able to detect early on whether a cancer therapy is working for a patient can influence the course of treatment and improve outcomes and quality of life. However, conventional detection methods – such as PET scans, CT and MRI – usually cannot detect whether a tumor is shrinking until a patient has received multiple cycles of therapy. A new technique developed in pre-clinical models by investigators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) offers a new approach and a read out on the effectiveness of chemotherapy in as few as eight hours after treatment.

Breakthrough Open Source Software to Process Raw Image Data for High-Resolution Microscopy

Single molecules can be observed in detail using special microscopes. However, these ultra-high resolution instruments require an image processing step to process the raw image data to obtain an image. A new open source software solution, capable of rapidly and efficiently processing such raw image data has been developed by the Members of the Biomolecular Photonics Group at Bielefeld University for an ultra-high resolution fluorescence microscope used for biophysical research.

c-myc mRNA has been established as a potential biomarker for detecting cancer, thanks to its critical function as a tumor suppressor or oncogene.
