Quantum Simulator Helps Shed Some Light on Properties of Rippled Graphene

The single-carbon-atom-thick material, graphene, featuring ripples is not easy to understand. Instead of creating such ripples physically, physicists investigating this kind of unusually shaped material rely on a quantum simulator. It is made up of an artificial lattice of light - called ultra-cold optical lattice - akin to eggs held in the cavities of an egg tray.

UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, and Duke Launch Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC State and Duke are launching a partnership to dramatically broaden access to nanotechnology facilities and expertise to faculty, students, businesses and educators across the Triangle and nationwide. Synopsys, Inc. today announced that TSMC has certified its IC Compiler™ II place and route product for V0.9 of 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology (N10FF), and are on track to work towards V1.0 completion in Q4, 2015. IC Compiler II is the successor to IC Compiler, the place and route solution for advanced designs, delivering an improvement in throughput while achieving quality-of-results (QoR) that meets TSMC's certification requirements.

Detecting breast cancer in women with dense mammary tissues could become more reliable with a new mammogram procedure that researchers have now tested in pre-clinical studies of mice. In their report in the journal ACS Nano, they describe injecting gold nanoparticles in mammary tissue to enhance the imaging of early signs of breast cancer.

Interplay Between Platinum Nanoparticles and Iron-Oxide Surface Increases Reaction Efficiency

Platinum is a great catalyst and can be used for many different applications. It's expensive stuff though, so tiny platinum nanoparticles sitting on cheap metal oxide materials are used to convert harmful carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Using scanning tunnelling microscopes, scientists at TU Vienna have now been able to image the catalytic behaviour of platinum sitting on iron-oxide, which allowed them to explain the process on an atomic scale.
