Scientists Develop New Process to Make Amorphous Nanoparticles with Increased Solubility

In collaboration with researchers from the renowned universities Harvard, EPFL (Switzerland), and Yale, BASF scientists developed a new process that makes amorphous nanoparticles with increased solubility. This improves the efficient uptake of drugs, for example, in the human body. Without such processing drug molecules would arrange in the form of crystals, which are difficult to dissolve. Due to poor solubility in many cases the development of innovative drugs has been discontinued.

UT Researchers Produce High Quality Magnetic Thin Films Using Nanosheets

Researchers at the University of Twente's MESA+ research institute have revealed that excellent quality magnetic thin films can be produced using 2D crystals, also known as nanosheets, allowing the preferred direction of the magnetism to be controlled locally.

AFM and STM Help Identify Atomic Species at Surface of Anatase Titanium Dioxide

A NIMS research team successfully identified the atoms and common defects existing at the most stable surface of the anatase form of titanium dioxide by characterizing this material at the atomic scale with scanning probe microscopy. This work was published under open access policy in the online version of Nature Communications on June 29, 2015.

Countries Must Collaborate on Regulatory Aspects of Nanotechnology in Agri and Food Sector

An overview of regulatory solutions worldwide on the use of nanotechnology in food and feed production shows a differing approach: only the EU and Switzerland have nano-specific provisions incorporated in existing legislation, whereas other countries count on non-legally binding guidance and standards for industry. Collaboration among countries across the globe is required to share information and ensure protection for people and the environment, according to a JRC co-authored paper.

Nanowires Twisted into Springs Boost Light Absorption for Nanoscale Photosensors

In the question of curly versus straight, new evidence suggests curly wins – at least in the world of nanowires. Researchers from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, have shown that twisting straight nanowires into springs can increase the amount of light the wires absorb by up to 23 percent. Absorbing more light is important because one application of nanowires is turning light into electricity, for example to power tiny devices.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) researcher Vladimir Zharov, Ph.D., D.Sc., was awarded a $1.7 million grant by the National Cancer Institute for clinical testing of a new technology called Theranostics, which is an integration of early diagnosis and treatment of melanoma.
