Confined Surface Phonon Polaritons Within Hexagonal Boron Nitride Exhibit Unique Metamaterial Properties

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) scientists, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Manchester, U.K.; Imperial College, London; University of California San Diego; and the National Institute of Material Science (NIMS), Japan, have demonstrated that confined surface phonon polaritons within hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) exhibit unique metamaterial properties that enable novel nanoscale optical devices for use in optical communications, super-resolution imaging and improved infrared cameras and detectors.

Iron-Oxide Nanoparticles Can Successfully Detect Ovarian Tumors In Vivo

Google’s latest search initiative isn’t taking place online, but in the human body instead. On October 28, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Internet giant wants to design tiny magnetic particles to patrol the body for signs of cancer and other diseases. Google said its nanoparticles, less than one-thousandth the width of a red blood cell, would seek out and attach themselves to cells, proteins or other molecules inside the body.

Dr. Anouk Rijs, researcher at the Molecular and biophysics group at Radboud University, has been awarded a Mildred Dresselhaus Award which includes a guest professorship. These awards are given each year by the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI) to two internationally outstanding female scientists. Rijs is awarded the junior ‘young star’ award.

Flexible electronic sensors based on paper -- an inexpensive material -- have the potential to some day cut the price of a wide range of medical tools, from helpful robots to diagnostic tests. Scientists have now developed a fast, low-cost way of making these sensors by directly printing conductive ink on paper. They published their advance in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
