Physicists Successfully Calculate Conductance Mechanisms in Graphene Nanoribbons

One of graphene's most sought-after properties is its high conductivity. Argentinian and Brazilian physicists have now successfully calculated the conditions of the transport, or conductance mechanisms, in graphene nanoribbons. The results, recently published in a paper in EPJ B, yield a clearer theoretical understanding of conductivity in graphene samples of finite size, which have applications in externally controlled electronic devices.

Novel Reusable Probe for AFM Enables Precision and Stability in Picoscale Force Measurements

JILA researchers have engineered a short, flexible, reusable probe for the atomic force microscope (AFM) that enables state-of-the-art precision and stability in picoscale force measurements. Shorter, softer and more agile than standard and recently enhanced AFM probes, the JILA tips will benefit nanotechnology and studies of folding and stretching in biomolecules such as proteins and DNA.

Merrimack MM-398 Study Demonstrates Feasibility of Ferumoxytol Iron Oxide Nanoparticle as a Tumor Imaging Agent

Merrimack Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced Phase 1 results from a clinical pilot study demonstrating that ferumoxytol*, an iron oxide nanoparticle, was well tolerated when used as a tumor contrast agent prior to MM-398 treatment. Data from the first cohort of patients in this study were presented at the American Association of Cancer Research Annual Meeting, April 5-9, 2014, in San Diego, California.

Major Breakthrough in Methods of Information Processing in Nanomagnets

Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have achieved a major breakthrough in the development of methods of information processing in nanomagnets. Using a new trick, they have been able to induce synchronous motion of the domain walls in a ferromagnetic nanowire. This involved applying a pulsed magnetic field that was perpendicular to the plane of the domain walls.
