Study Investigates How Individual S. aureus Cells Glom onto Metallic Nanostructures

The bacterium Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus) is a common source of infections that occur after surgeries involving prosthetic joints and artificial heart valves. The grape-shaped microorganism adheres to medical equipment, and if it gets inside the body, it can cause a serious and even life-threatening illness called a Staph infection. The recent discovery of drug-resistant strains of S. aureus makes matters even worse.

Atomic Force Microscope Tip Used to Pull up Isolated Molecular Chains from a Gold Surface

In collaboration with colleagues from Berlin and Madrid, researchers at the Department of Physics at the University of Basel have pulled up isolated molecular chains from a gold surface, using the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM). The observed signal provides insight into the detachment force and binding energy of molecules. The results have been published in the renowned scientific journal PNAS.

Fulcrum SP Materials Ltd, a world leader in innovative nano-technology for enhanced composite materials, today introduced its SP1/CNT reinforcement solution for PAN/phenolic composites. Fulcrum has demonstrated that flat-wise tensile strength more than doubles, and inter-laminar shear strength increases significantly, while preserving overall composite strength. These improvements were achieved using small amounts of Fulcrum's proprietary SP1/CNT complex (0.2%-0.3% by weight of the PAN fabric).

Two-Photon Microscopy Used to Study Purkinje Cells

Whether it is playing a piano sonata or acing a tennis serve, the brain needs to orchestrate precise, coordinated control over the body's many muscles. Moreover, there needs to be some kind of feedback from the senses should any of those movements go wrong. Neurons that coordinate those movements, known as Purkinje cells, and ones that provide feedback when there is an error or unexpected sensation, known as climbing fibers, work in close concert to fine-tune motor control.
