Clean Energy Startup Eonix, Awarded $250,000 NYSERDA Grant

Furthering Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s entrepreneurial vision for education in New York State, the Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) at SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) today announced that Eonix, a clean energy startup born at SUNY Poly and led by CNSE graduate students, has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

DNA-Based Tension Probes Map How Cells Mechanically Sense Their Environments

Adherent cells, the kind that form the architecture of all multi-cellular organisms, are mechanically engineered with precise forces that allow them to move around and stick to things. Proteins called integrin receptors act like little hands and feet to pull these cells across a surface or to anchor them in place. When groups of these cells are put into a petri dish with a variety of substrates they can sense the differences in the surfaces and they will "crawl" toward the stiffest one they can find.

Nanoscale Device Can Rapidly Gauge Optimal Dose of Potentially Toxic Cancer Drug

In less than a minute, a miniature device developed at the University of Montreal can measure a patient's blood for methotrexate, a commonly used but potentially toxic cancer drug. Just as accurate and ten times less expensive than equipment currently used in hospitals, this nanoscale device has an optical system that can rapidly gauge the optimal dose of methotrexate a patient needs, while minimizing the drug's adverse effects. The research was led by Jean-François Masson and Joelle Pelletier of the university's Department of Chemistry.

Molecular Structure of Water Observed at Nanoscale Interfacial Region of Gold Electrodes

When a solid material is immersed in a liquid, the liquid immediately next to its surface differs from that of the bulk liquid at the molecular level. This interfacial layer is critical to our understanding of a diverse set of phenomena from biology to materials science. When the solid surface is charged, just like an electrode in a working battery, it can drive further changes in the interfacial liquid. However, elucidating the molecular structure at the solid-liquid interface under these conditions has proven difficult.

CASIS Awards Grant to Develop Remotely Controlled Nanochannel Drug Delivery System

Houston Methodist Research Institute scientists will receive about $1.25 million from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space to develop an implantable device that delivers therapeutic drugs at a rate guided by remote control. The device's effectiveness will be tested aboard the International Space Station and on Earth's surface.
