This video shows the workings of adaptive diaphragm positioning. The so-called multi-leaf collimators are applied in radiotherapy to accomplish an optimal distribution of the dose. This involves arranging individual leaves so that the healthy tissue has the best possible protection from the radiation. If the individual leaves are narrower, the contour of the diaphragm becomes more precise. Piezo-based linear motors are well-matched as drives for the leaves. They are compact, fast, and produce the required high forces.
