New Motion and Laser Control Algorithms Improve Quality and Throughput in Micro-Hole Laser Drilling

Micro hole drilling accuracy using laser power instead of mechanical drill bits allows for a reduction in hole pitch and diameter. Motorized XY tables with linear motors are perfect to the long travel ranges needed to cover large areas. However, they are not fast enough for the micrometer level motion required to create square micro hole shapes. Here, a piezoelectric nanopositioning scanning stage can provide the speed and precision. Taper control is also critical in laser drilling, which requires fast and precise Z-focus control of the vertical axis.
